Mary Walters

Mary M. Walter, 93, of Oak Harbor, longtime former resident of Pennsville, N.J. and Milton, Pa., died peacefully with her daughter at her side on Sunday, May 8, 2005.
Mrs. Walter was born in Milton, Pa., March 24, 1912, to William F. Maxfield and Jennie C. (Kerstetter) Maxfield. She graduated from high school in Milton, and went on to attend Shippensburg State College, in Shippensburg, Pa., where she received her education degree. She taught school at a one-room school house in the Milton, Pa., area. June 19, 1938, Mary married Malcolm L. Walter in Milton. The couple moved to Pennsville, N.J., where Mary taught sixth grade at Deep Water Elementary School. While employed there, she also taught sixth grade science and math. She retired after 34 years in the teaching profession. In 2003, she moved to Oak Harbor to be close to her daughter.
Mary was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Milton, Pa., and the United Methodist Church in Pennsville, N.J. She was an avid china painter, and loved to travel extensively. Mary was an active volunteer with the visiting nurses.
Mary is survived by her daughter, JoAnn L. Walter of Oak Harbor; by her son, M. Lee Walter and wife Judi of Boones Mill, Va.; by two grandchildren, Mack Walter and wife Michelle of Converse, Texas, and Paige Walton and husband Peter of Farmington, Utah; also, one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Walter. She was preceded in death by her husband Malcolm L. Walter and by her brother John Maxfield.
A graveside service will be held at Harmony Cemetery in Milton,, Pa., Saturday, May 14. Local arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
