Ruth Lorene Andrade, 85, died Jan. 6, 2004, in Oak Harbor. She was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Clinton, Iowa to Charles and Augusta C. (Kruse) Ladehoff.
Ruth was raised in Clinton, Iowa and graduated from Lyons High School with the Class of 1936. Following graduation she attended Scoville Business School for two years and then worked for Gabriel Lumber Company.
Ruth moved to Balboa, Canal Zone, in 1943 and began work as an industrial manager for civil service in the Panama Canal Zone. She was married to Edward C. “Andy” Andrade on Jan. 21, 1948, in Balboa, Canal Zone.
In December of 1951, Ruth and Andy moved to Oak Harbor. Ruth worked for Whidbey Island Naval Air Station civil service as a clerical supervisor, retiring in 1967.
Ruth was very active in the Oak Harbor community. She was a member of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and Ruth Circle. She was a longtime bowler and member of North Whidbey Women’s Bowling Association and past secretary-treasurer of that organization. Each year, the North Whidbey Women’s Bowling Association hosts the Ruth Andrade Bowling Tournament to honor Ruth. She was also president and past secretary-treasurer of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NAFRE). She was a member of the Oak Harbor Emblem Club No. 450 and a member of the Whidbey Vagabonds and a Platinum member of the Oak Harbor Senior Center.
Ruth was very involved with veterans groups, serving as past president and past secretary-treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary, Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 97; past chaplain and 35-year member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Whitehead-Muzzall Post No. 7392 and Auxiliary Member of George Morris Post No. 129, American Legion, all of Oak Harbor. She also assisted Andy with the activities of Little League Baseball in Oak Harbor for many years.
Ruth is survived by two sister-in-laws, Grace Liming of Alameda, Calif., and Adeline Ladehoff of Clinton, Iowa, 10 nieces and nephews and by her long time caregivers Carolyn and Bob O’Dell of Oak Harbor. Ruth’s husband Andy preceded her in death.
Memorial services for Ruth Lorene Andrade will be celebrated at Oak Harbor Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, with Pastor Laurie Johnson officiating. Cremation was held with inurnment at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Oak Harbor Lutheran Church or North Whidbey Little League Building Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
