Memorial services for Irene DeVries Wanamaker will be held at Coupeville First United Methodist church on Monday, Aug. 31, with Reverend JinMing officiating.
Mrs. Wanamaker was cremated; private interment services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
Irene D. Wanamaker died Aug. 23, 2009. She was born October 10, 1910, in Oak Harbor to early pioneers Menzo and Mabel DeVries on her parents’ farm in Oak Harbor, which is now Bonnie View Acres. Her husband Floyd; her parents Menzo and Mabel; two brothers, Charles Eugene James and Carroll DeVries; and sister Lucille Hanks preceded her in death.
Irene attended school in Oak Harbor where she was active in high school sports, operettas and all school activities. After graduation in 1928 from high school she attended Bellingham Normal School (now known as Western Washington University) for two years. Later she went to work in the accounting department of Weyerhaeuser Timber Company and lived in Everett until she married Floyd (Pat) A. Wanamaker on Sept. 26, 1938. They made their home in Coupeville for 55 years. Mrs. Wanamaker assisted her husband Floyd (Pat) as he served in the 10th Legislative District for 14 years. Mrs. Wanamaker was an active member of the United Methodist Church, Island County Historical Society and the Republican Party. She was an avid bridge player, golfer and gardener. She loved good music.
Irene leaves behind one daughter, Jacqueline Rumple of Jasonville, Ind.; three sons and daughters-in-law, John E. and Phyllis Wanamaker of Henderson, Nev., Patrick A. and Linda Wanamaker of Poulsbo, and Robert E. and Marsha Wanamaker of Oak Harbor; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren, four great- great-grandchildren; sister in-law Martha DeVries; nieces, nephews, and many friends.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church Memorial fund of Coupeville, or a charity of choice.
