Published April 4, 2007

Capt. Art Barie, 78, former Commanding Officer of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (1973 to 1975), has died at his home in Palm Desert, Calif.

Capt. Barie received his wings and commission in 1949 as one of the last of the Flying Midshipman. Over the course of his 33 years in the Navy, he flew many different types of aircraft, primarily the Avenger, Corsair, Skyraider and the A6 Intruder. His personal decorations included the Bronze Star Medal, the Silver Star Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross with three gold stars, the Air Medal with two gold stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross.

One of his youthful ambitions was to be an educated man, which he attained with degrees from Auburn and Harvard. His many friends and family around the world can attest to Art’s witty writing and faithful correspondence. In later years, he researched his family genealogy and found many friends via his quest.

As a naval aviator he traveled all over the world, visiting exotic ports on his deployments, and then enjoying many cross-country trips with Pogo during their retirement years. Some of his favorite retirement activities on Whidbey Island were tending to their large vegetable garden, fishing and crabbing, and volunteering at various local charities. He played tennis and lawn bowling, and spent many happy times walking on West Beach. Art and Pogo moved permanently to Palm Desert in 2004 in order to be closer to their children.

He was a generous host, a convivial guest, a warm and steady friend, and a true southern gentleman.

Capt. Barie was preceded in death by his parents; brother R. G. Barie; and daughter Clary. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Pogo; his children Viki, Tania and Art, Jr.; a granddaughter, Jamie Willie; and two great-grandchildren.

Remembrances maybe made to the American Cancer Society, 360-733-5390 or 800-ACS-2345. A private inurnment will be held in Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Powder Springs, Ga. Memorial services are pending.
