Memorial services for Richard Alan Vaughan will be held Thursday, March 25, at 2 p.m., at Coupeville United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Boyd officiating. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.
Richard Alan “Rich” Vaughan, 66, died at Careage of Whidbey March 19, 2004. He was born April 23, 1937, in Coupeville to Ivy Emmet Morgan Vaughan and Norma Corinne (Solid) Vaughan. He was raised in Coupeville and graduated with the Class of 1955.
Rich attended Skagit Valley College, Mount Vernon and received his associate of arts degree in 1955. He entered the U. S. Army, serving at Fort Ord, Calif., and Fort Knox, Ky. He returned from the service and entered the University of Washington. He received his bachelor of science in civil engineering (B.S.C.E.) from the University in 1964. He served as a professor of engineering at Shoreline Community College from 1967 to 1995.
Mr. Vaughan also worked as a civil engineer for R.W. Beck and Associates and Hill and Ingman, both of Seattle, for many years. He was involved in the design of many buildings in the Seattle area. He was married to Denise Marie Stewart in Mount Vernon Nov. 30, 1963.
Mr. Vaughan received the R. W. Jones Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers and University of Washington.
Rich was an avid Husky fan for most of his life. He also enjoyed golf and boating in the San Juan Islands. He also commercial fished in Alaska for a time. Rich was a member of Coupeville United Methodist Church and the University of Washington Alumni Association. He was also a member of the Washington Society of Professional Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Mr. Vaughan is survived by his wife Denise at the family home, Seattle. He is also survived by five brothers and sisters and their spouses: Beverly Tommasi of Bedford, Texas; David and Lorna Vaughan, Ray and Janice Vaughan, Barbara and Steve Cope and Ken and Diana Vaughan, all of Coupeville.
Nine nieces and nephews, Bunnie Gonzales, Curtis Edwards, Jr, Melissa Pope, Tony Tommasi, Caren Hopkins, Jerry Vaughan, Michael Vaughan, Phillip Vaughan and Steven Cope also survive.
