Mary Kay Dunnam

Mary Kay Dunnam, 59, of Oak Harbor, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mrs. Dunnam was born in Park Rapids, Minn., on June 29, 1950, to Carl and Lila (Pommier) Nelson. Kay moved to Miles City, Mont., as a young girl and graduated from high school there. She attended Miles Community College, where she met Craig S. Dunnam. The couple was married on Aug. 7, 1971, in Miles City. Subsequent residences included Dillon and Great Falls, Mont., Heber and Vernal, Utah, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Dillingham, Alaska. They settled in Oak Harbor in 2000.

Kay was a deeply committed follower of Jesus Christ, and was an active member of Baptist churches in the communities in which she resided. Most recently she was a member of the Bible Baptist Church of Oak Harbor, where she was actively involved with her husband in the Singles and Visitors Meals Ministry and the Zawkane Fellowship for seniors. She had a passion for making cakes, and her handiwork in this area was evident at numerous weddings and other special occasions. She loved being with the grandkids.

Kay is survived by her husband Craig, at home in Oak Harbor; three children: Sacha Dunnam and Donovan Dunnam (Hollee), all of Oak Harbor, and Lisa Stanley (Joe) of Blythewood, S.C.; three grandchildren, Sean Patrick, Meghan Joy and Payton Rose; her mother, Lila Nelson, of Oak Harbor; two brothers, Bruce Nelson (Karen) of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Pete Nelson (Sue) of Mill Creek. She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Nelson (1993) and by an infant child. Above all else, Kay was an adopted child of the King.

Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 2, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Whidbey Memorial Chapel. A celebration of Kay’s life will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. at the Bible Baptist Church, Pastor Robert Sargent officiating, with interment following at Sunnyside Cemetery. A reception will take place at the church immediately after the committal service. Memorials are suggested to the Whidbey General Hospital MAC Unit, 101 N. Main St., Coupeville, WA 98239.
