Doris Ann Ward died May 27, 2006 at Whidbey Island Manor at the age of 72. She was born Sept. 10, 1933 in Everett to Lloyd and Minnie (Stohr) Boardman. She was raised in Clinton and graduated from Langley High School. Following graduation she attended Everett Community College, receiving her Associate of Arts Degree in Physical Education.
Doris met Charles H. “Chuck” Ward and they dated while Doris was in college. They were married in Bellingham on Jan. 30, 1954. Doris began work to help support her family. She then took a part-time job with the Town of Coupeville as Clerk and Treasurer. That position soon became full time and Doris was re-elected to her position for many, many years. She also served as bookkeeper for the husband’s business, Chuck’s Electric.
Following retirement, Doris began volunteer work at the Oak Harbor Senior Center, serving as a coordinator for the Meals-on-Wheels program. Doris enjoyed bowling at Ebey Bowl, camping and boating. For many years, she was a member of the Orthopedic Hospital Guild. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader and a volunteer at the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Paula A. Czarnick and husband Michael of Coupeville, Cindy M. Haller of Camano Island, by one sister Phyllis Meadors of Chimacum, and by four grandchildren: Erin Goff and husband Michael of Coupeville; Joseph Czarnik, stationed overseas with the U. S. Navy; Sonya Green and husband Darryl of Granite Falls and Charles Haller of Camano Island. Doris was best known as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Private family graveside services for Doris Ward were held at Sunnyside Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, June 9 at 2 p.m. at the Coupeville United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the Oak Harbor Senior Center Foundation. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
