Doris Smith, 81, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham on July 3, 2006, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Highmore, S.D., on Jan. 7, 1925. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret and Josie, and brothers Ben, Steven and Robert. She was also preceded in death by granddaughters Colleen Palmer and Shannon (Palmer) Eagle.

Doris worked at NAS Whidbey for the Civil Service until her retirement in 1992. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. She served as president of the Legion Auxiliary for two years.

Doris is survived by her daughter Janice and son-in-law Don Hedstrom of Oak Harbor; her sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kermeen Bower of Oak Harbor, Don and Kim Bower of Oak Harbor, and Steven and Jamie Smith of Bellingham. She had a large loving family which included 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Doris always opened her heart and home to all that needed them, which we all did at one time or another.
