Lois Meyers

Lois Matiel Meyers, 86, died suddenly at Whidbey General Hospital Jan. 7, 2004. She was born Dec. 1, 1917, in Pierre, S.D., to Clarence D. and Effie (McKay) Chapman. Lois was the oldest of eight children.

Lois moved to Seattle at the age of 12. She attended James Madison Junior High School and graduated from West Seattle High School. Lois attended business school for two years and then began work on the railroad as a secretary. She met a young switch engineer, Harry Meyers, and they were married after a short courtship.

Lois and Harry moved to Oak Harbor for a short time and on to Bothell. In 1947, they returned to Oak Harbor. Lois passed her civil service exam and was hired by public works at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. She began work at the Seaplane Base and later moved to Ault Field and eventually retired from civil service as a statistician.

Lois was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Harbor; Oak Leaf Rebekah Lodge No. 254; Eastern Star-Tula Chapter No. 26, Oak Harbor Emblem Club No. 450; American Association of Retired Persons, (AARP); The Women’s International Bowling Congress and for many years, was active in Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was also the coordinator for the 55 Alive Driving program of AARP.

Lois is survived by one daughter, Pam Bradley of Oak Harbor, and by one son Roger Meyers and wife Marie, also of Oak Harbor. She is survived by stepchildren Harry D. Meyers, Jr. of Bellevue; Frederick P Meyers and wife Jeanine of Bellingham and Diane Carlier of St. Paul, Minn. Two brothers, Robert Chapman of Seattle, and John Chapman of Warm Beach, Fla., and one sister Mary Mason of Warm Beach, Fla., also survive. Her husband Harry, one son, Clare D. Meyers, and one granddaughter, Julie Ann Meyers, preceded Lois in death.

Lois requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Oak Leaf Rebekah Lodge scholarship fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
