Memorial services for Barbara Jane Gibbons will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 22, at Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor, with The Rev. Richard Harlacher officiating. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow at a later date.
Barbara Gibbons died March 18, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital, Coupeville. She was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Portland, Ore., to Nathaniel and Patricia (Malone) Anderson.
Barbara was raised in Portland where she attended Episcopal schools. She spent her last two years of high school at Lincoln High School, graduating in 1946. Barbara was a talented artist and took art classes in Portland and Los Angeles.
Barbara was married to Rae Ted Gibbons in Portland June 17, 1950. They moved to Quebec, where Ted was enrolled in foreign language classes. They returned to Oregon and settled in Eugene, where Ted finished his college program.
Ted followed a teaching career that took them to Wrangle, Ala.; Madras, Eugene and Bend, Ore.; and Spokane. Barbara had received her certification as an X-ray technician and found employment in each area they lived.
Barbara had a lifelong love of arts and crafts. She was a talented stained glass artist, love to paint with oils, was a talented seamstress, quilt maker, potter and doll creator. She sold her artwork at the Spokane Worlds Fair and eventually opened an arts and crafts shop in Spokane. In 1985, she and Ted moved to Oak Harbor.
Mrs. Gibbons is survived by her husband Ted at the family home, Oak Harbor; by four children: Molly (Bruce) Steinmetz of Independence, Mo.; Kathleen Gibbons, Michael Gibbons and Kelly Gibbons, all of Spokane; and by two grandchildren, Laurel and Ross Steinmetz, both of Independence, Mo. One sister and her parents preceded her in death.
