Published October 18, 2013

Eleanore Stone Lewis went quietly in her sleep to be with our Lord at the age of 94 on Oct. 18, 2013, in Wasilla, Alaska, where she was living with her daughter.

She was born on July 20, 1919, in Staten Island, N.Y., where she also attended school.

She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital nursing school in Pennsylvania. Eleanore served in the Army during WWII as a nurse in England and Wales, earning the rank of First Lieutenant. Besides hospitals and the Army, she also worked in private practice.

Eleanore, Ellie to those who knew her, moved with her family to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1955 where she and her husband, Walt, raised their family. She also lived in Nome and Wasilla for a period of time.

Later Ellie and Walt built a home in Oak Harbor and retired there in 1975. They attended the United Methodist church in Oak Harbor.

Ellie worked at the Native Service Hospital in Anchorage as well as volunteering with “Navy Mothers” and working at the airport in the Armed Forces room.

She enjoyed working at the elections and helping people in many different capacities.

Ellie enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, working outside and especially traveling the world, which she did extensively.

She loved her family and her many friends, recalling happy memories spent with each and everyone of them.

She was preceded in death by her husband Walter I. Lewis. She is survived by her children A. Wayne Lewis of Coupeville; Mark W. Lewis of Anchorage; Jay D. Lewis of Eagle River, Alaska; and Susan Lewis Swindells of Wasilla.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she was so proud of and loved to spend time with.

She is also survived by her only sibling, Harriett Eaton of Cape Porpoise, Maine; and her traveling buddy and very best friend, Edna Blackwood, of Oak Harbor.

Ellie, Mom, Nana and Gramma, you are many things to many people and we all love and miss you.

Memorial donations can be made to your local veterans associations.

Cards or notes can be sent to the Lewis family at 1045 Henry Loop, Coupeville, WA 98239.

A private family service will be held at a later date in Oak Harbor.
