Whitefoot earns trip to district | Tennis

Oak Harbor senior AnnaBelle Whitefoot placed fourth in singles in the Western Conference North Division Tennis Tournament in Oak Harbor Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 and 11, and qualified for the district playoffs.
The top four finishers in singles and doubles earned district berths.
Whitefoot, the third seed, opened the divisional tournament with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over sixth-seeded Cortni Huffman of Marysville Getchell. She then lost 6-0, 6-1 to second-seeded and eventual champion Livia Markwart of Arlington.
Whitefoot moved on at the expense of teammate Tamia Rios, the fifth seed, with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
In the match for third and fourth place, Whitefoot lost 6-0, 6-1 to Arlington’s Aleida Garduno-Craviato, the fourth seed.
Rios began the tournament by beating Marysville-Pilchuck’s Taylor Boyle, the 12th seed, 6-0, 6-0; then lost to Garduno-Craviato 6-2, 6-1. A 6-1, 7-6(3) win over Everett’s Melody Barnhart, the eight seed, set up the match with Whitefoot.
Rios, a junior, lost 6-1, 6-0 to Huffman in the match for fifth place.
In doubles action, Oak Harbor’s Peyton Carlson and Brianne Deguzman, the eighth seed, won in round one 7-6(7), 6-4. They then lost twice, falling to top-seeded and eventual champions Bradie Ferguson and Melissa Ness 6-1, 6-1 and fifth-seeded Lily Bynum and Layla Garduno of Arlington 6-3, 6-3.
Wildcats Elma Marie Empinado and Lauren Aspery, the 11th seed, lost 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to sixth-seeded Mady Jo Larsen and Gabby Grandbois of Marysville Getchell in the loser-out first round.
The district tournament is at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, and Wednesday, May 18, in Arlington. The top three finishers earn trips to the state tournament.
