Coupeville nearly upsets Lakewood in soccer

Lakewood nipped the Coupeville girls’ soccer team in a heart-stopping shootout Tuesday at Mickey Clark Field.

The Cougars slipped in a goal with just two and a half minutes left in the match to tie it up 1-1 and send the match to overtime. After two scoreless five-minute overtime periods, the teams went to the shootout.

The Wolves hit their first three, but missed the final two. Lakewood, after missing the first shot, hit four straight to get the win and avoid the upset. The Cougars, 8-4 in conference play and 10-4 on the year, had their hands full from the Wolves who are now 2-10, 4-10.

Coach Mike Thornton said, “We were talking after the game and the girls felt like they won. They really played hard.”

Thornton praised his goalie Ashley Manker. He said, “She made save after save.”

It was Senior Night for Coupeville, so Thornton started all his seniors. He said, “They all played well. Everyone was very supportive. The whole team played well.”

The Wolves now hit the road for their final two league matches. Thursday they travel to Cedarcrest, then on Saturday they journey to South Whidbey.

Next Wednesday Coupeville will begin post-season play.
