It didn’t take the Stanwood High School boys basketball team long to take control in an 82-37 win at Oak Harbor Friday, Jan. 8, in the Wesco North opener for both schools.

The Spartans (1-0, 7-3) scored a whopping 34 points to the Wildcats’ five in the first quarter, then tacked on 28 more in the second period to lead 62-13 at halftime.

Oak Harbor outscored Stanwood 24-20 in the second half.

“Stanwood has been at the top of our league for years, and it’s for a reason,” Oak Harbor coach John Weston said. “Coach Ward has a really good program.

“Coming into the game we thought we could compete with them, but they made an early run and we really lost our mental edge.  We started making silly mistakes and did not really execute any part of our game plan.”

Little went well for the Wildcats.

“We shot poorly, made a lot of bad turnovers and didn’t get stops on defense,” Weston said. “You do those things consistently and it’s hard to compete. We really reverted back to bad habits. We never really looked like a cohesive unit out there.

“At the end of the day it is only one loss with nine more league games left. In the standings, a loss is still a loss whether it is by one or 45.”

Dyllan Harris scored 10 points for the Wildcats, Adam Nelson had seven, Josh Cote six, Darnell Dizon five, Savion Hollins-Passmore five, Taeson Hardin two, Diangelo McKinney one  and Ozell Jackson one,

Oak Harbor (0-1, 1-9) goes to Arlington (0-1, 4-7) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12.
