Woman suffers fractures from two-car crash on North Whidbey Island

An Oak Harbor woman was injured in a two-car crash on North Whidbey Wednesday.

Mary Pattison, 78, was transported to Whidbey General Hospital with a possible leg and pelvic fracture, according to Trooper Keith Leary, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol.

A hospital official confirmed Thursday morning that she had been admitted to the hospital in stable condition.

Leary said the accident occurred shortly before 1:10 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 20 and Banta Road. Pattison was eastbound on Banta in a 2010 Hyundai and failed to stop at the stop sign.

Leary said at the time that it was unclear why.

“We don’t know,” he said. “According to witnesses, she just didn’t stop.”

As Pattison crossed the intersection, her vehicle was T-boned by a northbound 2007 GMC pickup truck on Highway 20. The driver has been identified as 60-year-old Tommy Stroud, a resident of Livingston, Texas.

He was not injured in the collision.

Despite the impact, Pattison’s vehicle continued across the intersection and had enough momentum to crash through a chain-link fence. The car came to rest in a dry retention pond on the east side of the highway.

Leary said drugs or alcohol were not involved and the official cause of the accident is failure to stop at a stop sign. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was not sure if a citation had been issued.
