During the past two years, $9,000 in grant money was donated to local nonprofits thanks to the volunteer efforts of an Oak Harbor resident.

Matt Iverson, a local Allstate agency owner, participated in the national Helping Hands in the community program to complete countless hours of volunteerism.

Each Allstate office can earn up to $5,000 in grants annually when employees donate time to local organizations, Iverson said. The money is then allocated back to the very organizations each employee served.

Six nonprofit organizations benefited from Iverson’s work, including the Town of Coupeville, the Island County and Skagit County historical societies and Skagit Valley Hospital.

Little League Baseball and the Washington Sustainable Food and Farming Network also received funding.

Iverson participated in a wide range of activities including assisting the Island County Historical Society set up for events and working in the concession stands at Little League games.
