Wedged between a beach and an environmentally sensitive lake are slabs of concrete that are a magnet for vandals.

The concrete, located on the beach on West Beach Road across the street from Swan Lake, is a popular place for spray painters but has become an eyesore for at least one nearby neighbor.

“It is always a popular place for graffiti to be painted,” said Vera Pitsch. “It just looks bad for the area.”

The two slabs of concrete are remnants of a bulkhead that washed away years ago. Several different types of graffiti currently adorn the concrete, including words, symbols and a giant eyeball.

Pitsch attended a recent Island County commissioners meeting and asked what could be done to clean up the site, adding the spray paint detracts from the beauty of the area.

Pitsch said she could round up volunteers to paint the concrete if the county would provide the supplies.

Bill Oakes, public works director for Island County, pointed out the bulkhead sits on private property, which limits the county’s options.

He said the bulkhead has been a popular spot for graffiti for years and he didn’t know what the bulkhead was originally built to protect.

He suggested Pitsch contact the property owner to see if volunteers can paint the structure.

Oakes said he would suggest types of graffiti-resistant paint that could be helpful for any volunteer effort. The county uses such paint throughout the parks system.

Pitsch said the best solution for the graffiti-laden concrete is to see if it can be removed.
