Editor,

Political campaigns often focus on promises. When considering Matthew Van Pelt for Island County commissioner, however, voters should also look at what he has already done for our community.

Matthew is a local business owner who understands the challenges faced by Island County families and employers. More importantly, he has consistently demonstrated a genuine heart for community service. His commitment to helping others did not begin when he became a candidate, and it is not something manufactured for a campaign.

Every Thanksgiving, Matthew personally delivers turkeys to families throughout Whidbey Island. This annual tradition reflects the kind of person he is someone who recognizes a need and steps forward to help without seeking attention or recognition.

Matthew has also supported our neighbors on Camano Island by helping raise money for the Camano Free Little Pantry. His service reaches across the entire County and demonstrates that he understands the importance of supporting local organizations that provide direct assistance to families in need.

I was also impressed by Matthew’s response when his political opponent was subjected to inappropriate personal attacks online. Instead of remaining silent or attempting to benefit politically, Matthew publicly denounced the attacks, defended his opponent’s character, and demanded that the behavior stop. In today’s political climate, that took courage and integrity. It showed that Matthew believes public service should be grounded in decency, respect, and personal responsibility.

Matthew Van Pelt is running to represent District 3 on the Island County Board of Commissioners. He brings the experience of a local business owner, a demonstrated record of community service, and the character to put what is right ahead of what may be politically convenient.

Island County needs leaders who do more than talk about serving others. Matthew Van Pelt has already shown us that service is part of who he is. I strongly encourage voters to support him for Island County Commissioner.
