Letter: Lecture series explores social, political climate

Editor,
In today’s social and political climate, we are experiencing a shift away from moderation and often view people with an “us vs. them” attitude. This shift, amplified by social media, has caused a breakage in meaningful conversations where differing opinions can be safely shared and considered. Our nation, our state, our communities and even our families are being torn apart by the polarity of individual opinions and beliefs.
How do we overcome this rift to heal relationships and communities? Are you curious?
Come join the Trudy Sundberg Lecture Series, presented by the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation for Scott Shigeoka’s presentation of “Curiosity is a Bridge for Connection.” His lecture will center on the practice of curiosity as a force for connection and transformation. Scott will share stories and concrete tools that you can apply to introduce more curiosity into your life and communities – especially in an era of disconnection and division. Scott is an internationally recognized curiosity expert, TED speaker, and the award-winning author of “SEEK: How Curiosity Can Transform Your Life and Change the World.” Scott’s free public presentation is Friday, March 20, 7:30pm at the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts in Langley.
Join the companion session, “Together: The Promise of Democracy,” presented by Yasemin Sari, assistant professor of philosophy at Seattle University. Yasemin will discuss the vital role everyday conversations between community members play in a democratic system. She will explore ways we can bridge gaps to create a world where the promise of democracy is brought to life. Yasemin’s free public presentation, sponsored by Humanities Washington, is Saturday, March 14, 3 p.m. at the Coupeville Library.
