Contest invites kids to get crafty

Kids with a big imagination can now participate in a local art contest centered around the Salish Sea.

Island County Marine Resources Committee and Sound Water Stewards have partnered together to host the contest, which asks kids to design their own Salish Sea creature.

Kids can design their own artworks, but naming their creatures is a requirement. Creatures without names will be disqualified.

And so far, the submissions have not disappointed.

Sound Water Stewards Administrative Coordinator Kelly Zupich said students have come up with creatures that are a mixture of real animals, but completely made-up ones are welcome too.

The contest is open to Island County students entering grades 2-7. Home-schooled students are invited to enter as well.

There will be prizes for each grade category, including a copy of “Explore the Salish Sea, a Nature Guide for Kids,” a pocket naturalist guide to the Northwest Seashore Life, a bookmark and stickers.

The winning entries will be displayed on the websites for the two organizations hosting the contest, www.islandcountymrc.org and soundwaterstewards.org.

Online voting will be open to the public to choose the winners. Winners will be announced in July and August.
