Oak Harbor man enters guilty plea to domestic violence charges

An Oak Harbor man who savagely beat his wife and attempted to sexually assault her in front of her young children agreed to a plea bargain.

On Monday, Jorge A. Alvarez, 40, pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Dec. 9 to assault in the third degree, attempted witness tampering and two counts of assault in the fourth degree with sexual motivation. All of the charges are domestic-violence crimes.

Under the terms of a plea bargain, Alvarez agreed to an exceptional sentence of three and a half years in prison.

Alvarez is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

The case has been going on for two years. During that time, Alvarez went through three attorneys. He wrote a letter to the judge complaining about his first attorney because the attorney wanted Alvarez to take a plea bargain.

The charges against Alvarez were amended three times in two years. At one point he had been charged with attempted rape.

In March of 2017, a 27-year-old woman reported to police that Alvarez had jumped on her in her sleep and attempted to rape her, but she managed to fight him off, the police report states. A 3-year-old and a 7-year-old child were in the room during the assault.

In October 2017, Alvarez was wanted on a warrant for missing a court date for the assault in the fourth degree with sexual motivation charge. He went to the woman’s house in violation of a no-contact order and assaulted her after she refused to have sex.

Alvarez punched and elbowed her multiple times in the face on the floor of the bedroom.

The older child tried to intervene and pleaded with Alvarez to stop hurting his mother.

When he was in jail, he had a third party contact his wife in an attempt to intimidate her and prevent her from cooperating with the prosecution, court documents indicate.
