The North Whidbey Little League junior softball team ran into a buzzsaw dressed in South Skagit uniforms in the opening game of the District 11 tournament Monday, June 17, at Mount Vernon’s Bakerview Park.

South Skagit won the first game of the best-of-three series 26-0 in four innings.

The two teams play again at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and, if necessary, at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday to determine which club will advance to the state tournament.

After scoring eight runs in the first inning, South Skagit batted around twice while recording 18 runs in the second.

South Skagit pitchers Olivia Collins and Alexia Saldivar combined to strike out 11 in four innings.

It wasn’t all bad for North Whidbey. Kendall King and Dede Jones slapped a doubles, and Grace Odeneall added a single.

North Whidbey turned a double play in the third inning, retiring the side in order after the big second inning.
