The offense scored in all but one inning and CJ Smith tossed a shutout to lead the Coupeville High School baseball team to a 9-0 win at Concrete Friday, March 18.
The win came two days after the Wolves defeated the Lions in a 13-12 thriller.
This time around, Smith kept Concrete (1-2) in check with an efficient 68-pitch complete game shutout. The senior pithed a four-hitter, striking out five and walking one.
Other than the lone walk, he reached a two-ball count only twice more in the game.
By contrast, three Concrete pitchers combined to throw well over 100 pitches, surrendering 13 hits and eight walks.
The Coupeville offense was nearly as efficient as Smith.
“Biggest take for this game is our at bats,” coach Marc Aparicio said. “Every player battled hard at the plate, even bench players.”
The Wolves had at least one hit in every inning and scored in all but the second.
Hunter Smith open the game with a single, stole second and scored on CJ Smith’s hit. Cole Payne followed with a run-scoring double.
Walks to CJ Smith and Payne and a single by Dane Lucero scored a run in the third inning.
In the fourth, Gabe Wynn singled and scored on Hunter Smith’s base hit.
Cameron Toomey-Stout singled in Matt Hilborn, who also singled, in the fifth.
Coupeville scored three times in the sixth inning.
Lucero and Payne singled, and Lucero scored when the Lions misplayed Payne’s base hit. After Hilborn walked, Wynn doubled home Lucero. Back-to-back walks to Toomey-Stout and Brenden Gilbert forced in the third run.
Payne doubled in the seventh and scored on a pair of errors.
Payne finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Hunter Smith, Lucero, Hilborn and Wynn all had two hits.
Coupeville (2-1) hosts Cedarcrest (0-2) at 4 p.m. Monday, March 21.
