The Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team finished second in the Bulldog Holiday Classic, losing the championship game to host Mount Vernon 44-31 Tuesday, Dec. 29.

The Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 19-6 in the first quarter and were never threatened.

Mount Vernon was aided in its fast start by hitting seven of nine free throws in the first quarter and finished 14-for-23 at the line.

Oak Harbor took 11 foul shots in the game, sinking just four.

The Bulldogs (4-4) led 30-20 at the break and 41-26 after three quarters.

“We had a trough first quarter,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “We had too many turnovers and gave up too many second chance points.”

Janae Payne and Julie Jansen paced Oak Harbor with eight points each, while Bryn Langrock scored seven, Deja Bunch six and Resego Mooki two.

The Wildcats played without two starters. Point guard Rashanna Graham missed the game with a concussion and wing AnnaBelle Whitefoot had a family obligation.

Oak Harbor (4-5) goes to Anacortes (6-3) at 7:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, for a nonleague game.
