High wind warning issued for Whidbey and surrounding areas

The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for an area that includes Whidbey Island and is expected to remain in effect until 10 p.m. today.

Wind speeds will increase and peak during the afternoon. Very windy conditions are expected to continue into Friday, but the strongest winds are expected on Thursday afternoon and evening, the weather service reported.

Southerly winds from 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph are predicted. The strongest winds are expected in Island and Skagit counties, as well as the San Juan Islands and the near-shore portion of Whatcom County.

The weather service warns that the winds may cause trees and branches to fall. Power outages are expected.
