Carolyn Benedick

Carolyn May “Dolly” Benedick, 84, of Oak Harbor, passed away on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at Fidalgo Care Center in Anacortes.
Mrs. Benedick was born in Detroit, Mich., May 2, 1920, to William and Clara (Herbst) Geschwend. After graduating from Southwestern High School in Detroit in 1938, she worked as an elevator operator at Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corp. in downtown Detroit.
Nov. 18, 1939, she married Anthony Benedick of Detroit in the upstairs nondenominational Chapel of the First United Methodist Church in Reno, Nev. They made their home in Vallejo, Calif., near Mare Island, where Anthony was a welder. A few years later they moved to Alameda, Calif., where Anthony worked at the Alameda Naval Air Station. Anthony preceded her in death March 20, 1970. After his death, Carolyn was employed at the Alameda Free Library. She retired from the library in 1985. In 1995 she moved to Oak Harbor to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Dolly enjoyed books and reading.
Dolly is survived by her daughter Carol Lutz and her husband Garry of Oak Harbor; her son John Benedick and his wife Bella Marlow of Norton, Mass.; her grandchildren, Kelly Campbell and wife Jennifer of Hayward, Calif.; Andrew Benedick and wife Erica of Arlington, Mass.; Ann Benedick of Massachusetts; and Kate and Emma Benedick of Norton, Mass.; grandchildren by marriage, Pam Balstad and husband Garret of Auburn; Tabetha Lutz-Scott and husband Bob Scott of Oak Harbor; Tim Lutz and wife Angela of Waterville and Ted Lutz and wife Heidi of Oak Harbor; also, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony in 1970 and by one grandchild, Jeffery Campbell in 1990.
A private family graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, 12721 — 30th Ave. N.E., Suite #201, Seattle, WA 98125. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
