Zima, Lee lead local runners in Whidbey Marathon

Oak Harbor’s James Zima and Bethany Lee were the top male and female local finishers in the 15th Annual Whidbey Island Marathon Sunday, April 23.

Edmonds’ Ryan Hill (3:06:40) won the marathon over 142 other runners.

Seattle’s Akiko Tsuchida (3:27.55) led all women, placing sixth overall.

Zima (3:43.45) was 17th among men and 18th overall.

Lee (3:47.15) was second to Tsuchida among the women and 23rd overall.

In addition to the marathon, Sunday’s races included a half marathon, 10K, 5K and 1K children’s run.

The four adult races combined for 1,586 finishers, up from last year’s 1,243. The high was 2,634 in 2014.

The half marathon, which included 851 participants, was won by Anacortes’ Dan McLean (1:14:40). Spokane’s Bryanna Petrie (1:22.49), who was third last year among women, took the top spot among females and finished third overall. She broke a string of three wins by Kristi Houk of Port Orchard (1:30:30), who placed second among women and 12th overall. Over the years, Houk has finished first five times and second three times in the half.

Coupeville’s James Stellar (1:27.55) and Holly Salinger (1:44:54) were the top local runners in the half. Stellar was fifth among men and sixth overall, while Salinger placed 14th among women and 58th overall.

Bellevue’s John Guin (41:07) led a field of 324 in the 10K. Kennewick’s April Axtell (46:07) paced the women and was seventh overall.

Oak Harbor’s Ryan Vasileff (41:24) was third, and Oak Harbor’s Julie Elliott (48:59) was second among women and 12th overall.

Oak Harbor’s Luke Turner (7:38) won the 5K, and Mill Creek’s Bambee Garfield (24:42) repeated as the top female finisher, taking second overall out of 268.

Lola Chargualaf (27:12) was the leading Whidbey finisher among women, taking third among females and 13th overall.
