Wolves win league opener, now 3-0 / Volleyball

The Coupeville High School volleyball team began its journey in the new North Sound Conference with a 3-0 win at Cedar Park Christian-Bothell Tuesday, Sept. 18.

“Any time you can go on the road in this league and come back with the win is an accomplishment,” coach Cory Whitmore said. “We played with a lot of focus and very clean from the service line, and then gradually put the pressure on, taking them out of rhythm.”

The 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 win in the league opener raised the Wolves’ season mark to 3-0; CPC fell to 0-1 and 4-2.

“Our hitting was shaky at times, but the passing was pretty consistent so our hitters could then settle in themselves,” Whitmore said.

Chelsea Prescott and Ashley Menges produced “great all-around games,” according to Whitmore.

Prescott finished with six kills, eight digs and four aces; Menges had six kills and four aces.

Emma Mathusek, who recorded a team high 11 digs, did “a great job passing and digging,” Whitmore added.

Maya Toomey-Stout paced the offense with 14 kills, Emma Smith added six with no errors and Hannah Davidson chipped in with five.

“A skill that we’ve been pushing has been smart and strong blocking, and we showcased that well tonight,” Whitmore said.

Smith posted six of the Wolves’ 10 blocks.

Scout Smith handed out 24 assists.

The league’s two undefeated teams, Coupeville (1-0, 3-0) and South Whidbey (1-0, 4-0), meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Langley.
