Wolves roll to 12-0 win in opener / Softball

A strong all-around effort helped the Coupeville High School softball team open the season with a 12-0 six-inning win at South Whidbey Saturday, March 17.

At the top of the list was the work of Katrina McGranahan in the circle. The senior pitcher tossed a one-hitter (a second-inning double by Mackenzee Collins), struck out three and walked three.

The offense mixed six hits with four walks and four Falcon errors to produce 12 runs.

The Wolves were also able to defeat South Whidbey ace Collins, who coach McGranahan called “probably the best pitcher we will see this year.”

Collins has signed to pitch for Division I Colorado State University next year.

Collins pitched the first four innings and gave up seven runs, but only one was earned. She surrendered four hits while striking out 10.

Coupeville scored three runs in the first inning behind singles by Scout Smith and Sarah Wright and two passed balls. From there, the Wolves added multiple runs in every inning but the second.

Wright finished with two hits, including a triple; Lauren Rose had a single and double; and McGranahan added two singles and scored four times.

Coach McGranahan was especially pleased with his defense, led by second baseman Smith, who helped turn a double play, and center fielder Hope Lodell.

Coupeville (1-0) plays North Mason (1-3) at home at 4 p.m. Friday, March 23.
