Wolves put away Redhawks / Soccer

A hat trick by Derek Leyva spurred the Coupeville High School soccer team to a 3-1 win at Port Townsend Tuesday, March 27.

The Wolves have struggled with the Redhawks in the past, including losing by shutouts three times last spring. Not this time around as Coupeville (2-1, 3-2-1) took over second place in the Olympic League standings; Port Townsend (1-2, 1-5) fell to third.

Leyva staked the Wolves a 2-0 halftime lead. The Redhawks tallied about 10 minutes into the second half, then missed a penalty kick that could have knotted the match.

“That set up a battle in the second half,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said. “We were able to keep them back, but we had to give it our all to do so.”

Leyva struck again, assisted by Sage Downes, with about five minutes remaining to give the Wolves a nice cushion.

Coupeville plays winless Chimacum (0-3, 0-4) at 4 p.m. Friday, March 30, at Mickey Clark Field.
