Wolves overcome inconsistent play to beat CPC / Volleyball

Overcoming an uneven performance, the Coupeville High School volleyball team won 3-1 at Cedar Park Christian Tuesday, Oct. 15.

The Wolves (4-1, 9-1), second place in the North Sound Conference, put some distance between themselves and the third-place Eagles (3-3, 8-4) with the 25-16, 26-24, 16-25, 25-18 win.

“We definitely had our big ups and downs (and) had to work through some moments where we weren’t controlling the tempo, but ultimately our players came up big in the fourth to seal the win,” Coupeville coach Cory Whitmore said. “Overall, happy to have a win on the road.”

Several players came up big in the match, according to Whitmore.

“Lucy Sandahl had great clean play with long service runs, solid defense and one spectacular diving play,” Whitmore said, noting the effort kept a rally alive and created “a big point to swing things in our favor.”

“I thought Scout (Smith) and Maya (Toomey-Stout) found their connection,” he added, “and Hannah (Davidson) went on two serving runs that scrambled CPC and gave us control of the fourth set.”

Smith finished with 35 assists, 12 digs, two kills, an ace and a block; while Toomey-Stout had 19 kills and eight digs.

Davidson collected nine kills, two aces and a block; and Zoe Trujillo chipped in with 12 kills and six digs.

Maddie Vandrak added five kills and 1.5 blocks, Sandahl had nine digs and two aces, and Emma Mathusek collected 10 digs.

The Wolves play at South Whidbey (3-3, 4-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17.
