Wolves maul Spartans

"Girls trounce Forks, 48-33. "

“The Coupeville girls got back into the win column Thursday as they trounced Forks, 48-33.The Wolves led before the entire team took the court as the Spartans were called for a technical foul because they had a starter listed that wasn’t at the game. The ensuing free throws for Brianne King of Coupeville started a 14-4 run, 11 of which would be scored by King.King and Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby worked well together during the run, with Ellsworth-Bagby taking control of the ball and getting it to an open King. We play together a lot, said Ellsworth-Bagby. That really helps because we always know where each other is on the court. The first quarter ended with Forks cutting into the Wolves lead, but five three pointers in the period by Coupeville held the lead at 22-10.There were times when there was a lot of preassure and we just needed to slow it down and control the ball, said Emily Young. The second quarter was a lesson in futility for both teams and the sparse crowd that was in attendance. Ellsworth-Bagby, who scored nine points on the night, went hard to the whole, drew a foul and got the bucket. Ellsworth-Bagby hit the free throw – and the three points were all the Wolves got in the quarter. We just need to play good defense, said King about the scoring droughts the team has suffered through this season. We need to force more turnovers so we can stay in the game.Luckily for Coupeville its defense would hold the Spartans to only six points in the quarter to preserve a 25-16 lead at the half.To hold them to six, that means that we are not giving them second and third shots, said Coupeville coach Greg Oldham. I think that is just the way we play as a team, up and down, Young. As long as we come out on top we are OK.The teams reached a stalemate during the third quarter as neither side could take control. But the Wolves put their adversaries away during the fourth to grab the team’s third win of the season and pull to within one game of .500.One big key for the Wolves was the scoring of Ellsworth-Bagby and Young, who hit three three-pointers for the game. People are keying in on Brianne (King) and Ashley (Ellsworth-Bagby), said Oldham. They started keying in on those two and Emily is a good shooter. We encourage her to shoot. The win is significant in that the Wolves will now take a week off before playing at Port Townsend in a two-day tournament Dec. 27-28.We get three days off and that is all, said Ellsworth-Bagby. We will be practicing every day.
