Wolves lose to SW, go to Granite Falls hoping to lock up playoff spot / Boys basketball

After losing 72-40 at South Whidbey Tuesday, Jan. 29, the Coupeville High School boys basketball team can now turn its attention to Granite Falls and a district tournament berth.

The Wolves go to Granite Falls for the regular-season finale to face the Tigers at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, with a playoff spot on the line.

Coupeville (1-8, 2-14) holds a one game lead over Granite Falls (0-9, 2-17) and the right to fifth place and the final district tournament berth allotted the North Sound Conference.

If the Tigers beat Coupeville, the two teams will meet at 5 p.m. the next day in Coupeville to break the tie.

Coupeville defeated Granite Falls 52-43 Jan. 8 in the first trip through the double round-robin league schedule.

If the Wolves qualify for the district tournament, they will start the postseason by playing at conference champion King’s (9-0, 14-4) at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4.

South Whidbey 72, Coupeville 40

The Falcons celebrated Senior Night, and one of its two 12th-graders, Kody Newman, put on a show.

Newman finished with 32 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. He was 14-for-14 at the foul line.

The senior guard now has 1,001 career points.

The Wolves’ Sean Toomey-Stout scored 6 points in the first quarter, but Newman had 9 and the Falcons went up 18-9.

Mason Grove and Hawthorne Wolfe hit three-pointers for Coupeville in the second quarter, but Newman tallied 9 and the Falcons finished the half on a 15-3 run to lead 37-17 at the break.

South Whidbey continued to roll in the second half, leading 51-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Jakobi Pilgram scored 5 points for Coupeville in the fourth period, but Newman continued his big night, getting 11.

Pilgrim, Toomey-Stout and Wolfe all ended with 8 points. Grove had 6, Gavin Knoblich 4, Ulrik Wells 3, Jean Lund-Olsen 2 and Xavier Murdy 1.
