“Wolves lose to B.C., outrebounded by 29”

Height disparity hurts the girls during their contest with Bellevue Christian

“The Coupeville girls continued their slide Friday thanks to the flu, lack of height and a five-point effort during the first quarter. The Wolves lost their third straight game, 50-47 to Bellevue Christian Friday.A height disparity hurt the girls during the contest as Bellevue outrebounded Coupeville, 52-23.We just have to be tougher, said Coupeville head coach Greg Oldham. We get into the right position but we are just not scrappy enough right now. Plus we are being too tentative with how the games are being officiated. We are just one piece of the puzzle away from being good. The Wolves continue to do well on the defensive end of the court as they managed to force 40 turnovers during the course of the game. It’s really the only thing that kept us in it, said Oldham.Bellevue eased its way out to an 11-5 lead during the first quarter as neither team could get the ball to actually go through the net. The second quarter saw both teams heat up from the floor as the competitors scored twice as many points as they did during the first quarter. The second half was more of the same as both teams combined for 16 points during the third and then 35 point during the fourth. With the loss the Wolves’ record drops to 2-4 overall, and the only saving grace for the team is that they have only lost one league game out of the four. The Wolves traveled to Bellevue with an emptier bus than usual as three girls missed the contest thanks to the flu.I am trying to avoid getting it and hoping that it will stay away, said Oldham.Ashley Ellsworth-Bagby scored 17 for the game and led the Wolves on the offensive side of the court.Ashley was consistent she scored in every quarter and just did a nice job of attacking the basket, said Oldham. Brianne King continued to be the Wolves hot hand this season as she poured in 20 points to lead her team. The game was the same as it has been this entire season for King as she scored all of her points in one or two quarters and then went dry, either not taking shots or not getting opportunities.Obviously she is a great scorer but she is just a sophomore, said Oldham. She is such a great defensive player as well and she can help us in a lot of ways.Sunday Oldham and the team attended the University of Washington’s game against Saint Mary’s. The coach compared King to Megan Franz, who is also a great scorer and defensive threat for the Husky women. The Coupeville girls play tomorrow night (Thursday) at 5:30 against Forks. The home game will be the girls last chance to get a win before their four-team tournament at Port Townsend Dec. 27 and 28. “
