Wolves dominate Olympic League honors

Coupeville High School’s final season in the Olympic Conference was a special one as the Wolves won league titles in softball, baseball, tennis, boys track and girls track and dominated the league awards.

Coupeville athletes were named the league’s Most Valuable Player in all three team sports.

Katrina McGranahan repeated as the Olympic League’s MVP in softball, Hunter Smith won the award in baseball and Derek Leyva, fresh off setting a new school record for goals in a season with 24, collected the honor in soccer.

In all, 14 Wolves received first-team honors.

The softball team landed seven on the first squad: McGranahan (pitcher), Veronica Crownover (first base), Hope Lodell (outfield), Emma Mathusek (outfield), Lauren Rose (shortstop), Scout Smith (second base) and Sarah Wright (catcher).

McGranahan and Rose finished their careers as four-time, first-team selections. Lodell earned her third first-team honor and Crownover her second.

Smith (pitcher/infielder) picked up his third first-team selection in baseball, and Matt Hilborn (pitcher/infielder) nabbed his second. Joey Lippo (outfield) and Julian Welling (first base) were also first-team choices for the Wolves.

In soccer, Leyva was joined on the first team by his cousin Aram Leyva and four-time selection William Nelson.

The Olympic League does not give conference awards in tennis and track; however, the Wolves produced a bushel of league champions.

Payton Aparicio and Sage Renninger won their third consecutive league doubles in crown in tennis this spring.

In boys track, champions included Jacob Smith (100, 200), Danny Conlisk (400), Jakobi Baumann (110 hurdles), Ariah Bepler (discus, high jump), Sean Toomey-Stout (javelin, long jump), the 4×100 relay team (Cameron Toomey-Stout, Sean Toomey-Stout, Jean Lund Olsen, Smith) and the 4×400 team (Smith, Henry Wynn, Sean Toomey-Stout, Conlisk).

For the girls, first-place finishers were Lindsay Roberts (200), Mallory Kortuem (400), Allison Wenzel (discus), Cassidy Moody (long jump) and the 4×100 and 4×200 teams (Korteum, Ashlie Shank, Maya Toomey-Stout, Roberts).
