Wolves complete league play with a win / Baseball

Sophomore Dane Lucero was steady at the plate and efficient on the mound to lead the Coupeville High School baseball team to a 12-2 win in five innings at Port Townsend Wednesday, May 3.

The win wrapped up the conference season for the Wolves, who finished second in the Olympic League with a 6-3 record (11-8 overall). Coupeville completes the regular season with a non-league game at South Whidbey (11-8) at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 4.

The Wolves open the playoffs with a loser-out, home district game against Bellevue Christian (7-10) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 9.

Lucero powered the offense Wednesday with three hits, including two doubles, a walk and four RBI.

From the mound, he struck out six and gave up no earned runs while tossing a five-hitter in a quick 60 pitches.

Coupeville started the rout with two first-inning runs. Hunter Smith and Taylor Consford both singled, and Smith scored on an error. Lucero singled in Consford.

In the second, Coupeville piled on five more runs, all coming after two outs and no one on. Matt Hilborn singled and Smith was hit by a pitch, then both scored on Consford’s base hit. Clay Reilly followed with a single that plated Consford. After Lucero walked and Kory Score singled, an error off the bat of Joey Lippo chased home two more runs.

In the fourth, the Wolves added three. Consford walked and Reilly and Lucero hit back-to-back doubles for two runs, then Lippo singled in the third.

Coupeville finished the scoring with two fifth-inning runs. Smith, for the second time, was hit by a pitch and Reilly singled and they scored on Lucero’s double.

All but one starter collected hits for Coupeville.

Reilly had a double and single and Consford and Lippo each rapped two singles. Smith, who scored three times, Score, Nick Etzell and Hilborn each finished with one single.

Port Townsend (0-8, 0-13) scored its two runs in the second inning on an error and two singles.
