Wolves can’t overcome offensive woes / Girls basketball

It was a tough day at the office for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team as it lost a non-league game 31-19 at Sequim Thursday, Feb. 2.

Now, Coupeville (8-0, 14-4) will attempt to run the conference table for the third consecutive year when it finishes the regular season with a home Olympic League game with Port Townsend (5-3, 10-7) at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4.

Because of a stout defense, the Wolves have amassed an impressive record this season in spite of offensive woes. On particularly rough shooting nights, such as at Sequim Thursday, Coupeville’s defensive prowess can’t overcome its offensive shortcomings.

In three of the Wolves four losses this season, they have scored 19, 19 and 14 points.

Coupeville played Sequim twice this week and surrendered the same number of points in each contest, 31. Coupeville, however, tallied 36 Monday.

Thursday’s game was a different story. The first quarter was typical of a Coupeville game when the Whidbey Island Wolves led 9-6 on a three-ball by Mia Littlejohn, two hoops by Lindsey Roberts and a bucket from Kalia Littlejohn.

From that point, Coupeville converted only four more field goals in the game.

Roberts drilled a three in the second period for Coupeville’s only points, but the Wolves held Sequim to only 2 and led 12-8 at halftime.

The second quarter was like “watching paint dry,” according to coach David King.

Things went haywire in the third when Sequim rallied for 17 points, 12 from Adrienne Haggerty, who finished with a game-high 18.

Roberts finished with 11 points, Mia Littlejohn 3, Kalia Littlejohn 2, Lauren Grove 2 and Sarah Wright 1.

Coupeville shot 8-for-43, 18.6 percent, for the game. Things were no better at the foul line, where the Wolves connected on only one of six.

“The effort was there, but what the mind was telling the players didn’t translate to the court,” King said. “We played tired, didn’t have our best defensive game and our offense didn’t show up. We did get some open shots throughout the game, (but) nothing seemed to fall.”

The loss ended Coupeville’s 10-game win streak.
