Wolves can’t catch a break / Boys basketball

Lady Luck, who has hidden from the Coupeville High School boys basketball team this season, was absent once again when the Wolves lost 54-49 at Mount Vernon Christian, fittingly on Friday, Jan. 13.

Coupeville’s Hunter Smith appeared to hit a game-tying three-point shot in the final seconds, but the bucket was waved off by an infraction.

The lost dropped the Wolves’ season record to 1-12 (1-4 in conference). Coupeville goes to North Mason (5-8) for a non-league game at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17.

At MVC (7-6), the Wolves, trailing 52-49, forced a turnover with just under nine seconds remaining in the game. A Wolf, however, stepped out of bounds while passing to Smith, nullifying his heroics.

Coupeville fouled the Hurricanes after the turnover, and the Mount Vernon Christian player sank both shots to secure the win.

Coupeville received 5 points each from Gabe Wynn, Ethan Spark and Joey Lippo in the first quarter to take a 17-15 lead.

Smith hit four free throws and Wynn and Lippo drained three-balls to help the Wolves go up 27-21 at halftime.

The Wolves managed only 7 points in the third quarter and MVC tied the game at 34 heading into the final period.

Coupeville had one of its best shooting nights of the season, drilling seven three-pointers and hitting nine of 13 foul shots.

Smith and Lippo led the Wolves with 11 points. Wynn had 8, Spark 5, Brian Shank 4, Cameron Toomey-Stout 3, Hunter Downes 2 and Steven Cope 2.
