Wolves blow lead, rally for win / Softball

Coach Kevin McGranahan liked the mental toughness of this club in its 7-6 win in the conference opener over visiting Klahowya Wednesday, March 29.

After the Wolves coughed up a 5-0 lead, “they didn’t panic and went back to work,” McGranahan said.

Scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth was a thrill, but it wasn’t the only highlight.

Coupeville senior Tiffany Briscoe launched a no-doubt-about-it home run in the second inning to stake the Wolves a 3-0 lead.

Coupeville got things going in the first. Singles by Jae LeVine, Sarah Wright, Mikayla Elfrank and Veronica Crownover produced two runs.

After Briscoe’s bomb, the Wolves tacked on two more runs in the third. Singles by LeVine and Crownover sandwiched around an error off the bat of Elfrank produced the pair.

That made it 5-0 and started Klahowya’s comeback.

The Eagles (0-2, 1-3) scored three times in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 6-5.

Unfazed, Coupeville evened the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Katrina McGranahan singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

With two outs in the sixth, Lauren Rose reached on an error and scored the game winner on LeVine’s double.

LeVine and Crownover each finished the game with three hits. Elfrank had two hits, including a triple. McGranahan was the winning pitcher, striking out eight.

Coupeville (1-0, 3-0) goes to Port Townsend (0-1, 0-2) at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 31.
