Wolves avoid upset / Volleyball

Hung over from an emotional win the night before, the Coupeville High School volleyball team recovered just in time to defeat visiting Granite Falls 3-2 Wednesday, Sept. 26.

In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Wolves squeaked out a 3-2 win at South Whidbey Tuesday.

The Wolves then faced a Granite Falls team that had won only two of five matches this season.

The Tigers, primed for an upset, beat Coupeville 25-20 and 25-21 in the first two games. The Wolves rallied to win the final three, 25-12, 25-22, 15-9.

“It wasn’t always pretty, and we struggled to find our own rhythm, adjusting to their unorthodox offensive style, but once we settled into controlling the serve and pass, our defense was able to turn into clean offense,” coach Cory Whitmore said.

“We gained some experience having to come back from an 0-2 deficit, and that will help us progress toward future games and our playoff run as well,” he added.

“Scout (Smith) set a great game, pushing the ball to Maya (Toomey-Stout) and Emma (Smith), and Hannah (Davidson) came up big with a few swings on a few attempts.

“Chelsea (Prescott) served locations really well in the third, fourth and fifth sets, which was huge to push the comeback.”

Stat leaders: Scout Smith, 35 assists, 2 aces; Toomey-Stout, 15 kills, 3 aces; Emma Mathusek, 18 digs; Prescott, 5 kills, 8 digs, 5 aces; Davidson, 7 kills; Emma Smith, 12 kills, 4 aces; Ashley Menges, 4 aces, 3 blocks.

Coupeville (3-0, 5-0) travels to Shoreline to meet state power King’s (3-0, 5-1) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2.
