Wildcats win coach’s final home match / Tennis

It was a fitting end for a long and successful career.

Oak Harbor High School tennis coach Horace Mells is retiring after coaching the Wildcats for 21 years, and his club sent him off a winner in his final home match.

The Wildcats swept visiting Arlington, which is coached by Oak Harbor graduate Jill (Nelson) Hatfield, 4-3, 5-2, Wednesday, May 2.

The first match was the completion of a contest started in Arlington April 13 that was stopped because of rain.

Oak Harbor also won 4-3 at Marysville Getchell Tuesday, May 1.

The Wildcats finished the regular season on a four-match winning streak, good for fourth place and a 6-6 record in the Wesco North. Oak Harbor was 7-9 for the season.

Next up is the Wesco North championships at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, May 8 and 9, at Snohomish.

Singles: 1, Maddie McKenzie won 6-1, 2-6, 6-0; 2, Emma Wezeman won 6-0, 6-0; 3, MJ Timm won 6-2, 6-2; 4, Taliah Black won 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles: 1, Sierra Brackeen/Johanna Schmidt lost 6-1, 6-4; 2, Danielle Lonborg/Shaina Aguirre lost 6-2, 6-1; 3, Elaine Aguirre/Annie Salinger lost 6-4, 6-3.

Oak Harbor 4, Arlington 3

Singles: 1, McKenzie lost 7-5, 6-0; 2, Wezeman won 6-0, 6-1; 3, Timm won 7-6(2), 6-2; 4, Brackeen won 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles: 1, Lonborg/Monique Stolmeier won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1; 2, Oak Harbor defaulted; 3, Oak Harbor defaulted.

Oak Harbor 5, Arlington 2

Singles: 1, McKenzie won 6-1, 6-0; 2, Wezeman won 6-1, 6-0; 3, Timm won 6-0, 6-0; 4, Black won 7-5, 6-1.

Doubles: 1, Brackeen/Schmidt lost 6-1, 6-3; 2, Lonborg/Katrina Martinez lost 8-4; 3, Elaine Aguirre/Salinger won 6-2, 6-3.
