Wildcats pick up 13 regional berths / Boys wrestling

Thirteen Oak Harbor High School wrestlers qualified for the boys regional tournament by finishing among the top six at the Western Conference North Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4, at Stanwood High School.

Leading the way for Oak Harbor were weight-class champions Sam Zook (285 pounds) and Blake McBride (132).

In addition, Oak Harbor’s Joe Brannon was named Wesco 3A North Assistant Coach of the Year and photographer John Fisken was selected as Media Person of the Year.

The Wildcats placed fifth out of seven teams with 190.5 points. Marysville-Pilchuck took team honors with 321.

Others earning regional berths for Oak Harbor were Shamus Warden, sixth at 106; Jakob Dailey, fourth at 113; Dawson Seabolt, fifth at 113; Zion Gomez, third at 120; Caleb Fitzgerald, fourth at 120; William Nickelson, fifth at 126; Tayvion Shaw, sixth at 126; Trevor Vaughn, sixth at 170; Michael Fisken, fourth at 182; Nick Dugin, sixth at 182; and Abe Coleman, sixth at 220.

Sydney Thomas (106) and Hayden Campbell (285) each placed seventh and are alternates.

The 15-team regional tournament is 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Everett High School. First through fourth places will qualify for the state tournament.

Zook, who is currently ranked No. 1 among 3A heavyweights, placed third in last year’s state meet.

This year Zook won the Wesco North title in rapid fashion. After taking the first two bouts with first-minute falls, he won the final when he pinned Tristan Emery of Arlington at the 2:29 mark.

McBride won with a quick pin, then 9-4, before topping Baily Alvis of Marysville-Pilchuck 6-1 in the championship match.
