Wildcats host 1st home match / Girls wrestling

A year of firsts continued for the Oak Harbor High School girls wrestling team Wednesday, Dec. 12, when the Wildcats hosted a 10-scramble.

The scramble was Oak Harbor’s first home event (and only home event this season) as a girls team. In the past, the Wildcat girls competed with the boys as a co-ed squad.

At scrambles, schools signup to compete and girls from the same weight classes are matched up. Organizers generally try to pair up wrestlers based upon wrestling experience. Winners meet winners and losers face losers as the rounds progress.

The bouts count as league matches and are used for seeding into the postseason.

More than 80 wrestlers competed in Wednesday’s meet.

“I thought our girls wrestled extremely well,” Oak Harbor coach Brian Farmer said. “I was very pleased with their improvement and effort.

“As a whole this year, we are meeting our team goals and getting better with our practices, leading to better performance during our matches.”

The Wildcats compete in the Pride of the Lady Lions Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in Lynden.

In Wednesday’s scramble, Taylor Cress (125 pounds) led a group of five undefeated Oak Harbor wrestlers with three wins. Adelina Lopez (120), Anika Rasmussen (130), Barrett Chowning (140) and Diandra Dominguez (155) each won both their matches.

Ella Erikson (115), Autumn Coker (125) and Nicole Snipes (130) also won matches as the Wildcats finished with an overall mark of 15-11.
