Wildcats give 1st-place Arlington a battle / Girls basketball

The Arlington High School girls basketball team expected little resistance from host Oak Harbor Tuesday, Jan. 29. The Wildcats, however, made their presence known.

It took the Eagles three quarters, but they finally turned back the pesky Wildcats for a a 51-31 win.

Ninth-ranked Arlington (11-1, 14-4) entered the game tied for first in the 15-team Western Conference 3A/2A division. Oak Harbor (0-13, 3-16) sits at the other end, and the Wildcats did not go quietly in their final home game of the season.

Senior Miranda Wilson popped in a pair of three-balls in the first quarter and the Wildcats trailed by only 1, 9-8.

Payton Parks scored 8 points for Oak Harbor in the second period, but the Eagles upped their advantage to 25-18.

Parks added 5 points in the third quarter to help the Wildcats stick around, down 38-27 heading into the fourth period.

Oak Harbor trimmed the gap to 9, then Arlington finally pulled away.

The Wildcats managed only four free throws in the last quarter.

Freshman Parks topped the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points. Wilson finished with 9, Mikhaela Cortez 4, Jasmine Ford 2 and Anna Jones 1.

“We played well,” Oak Harbor coach Jon Atkins said. “Jasmine and Olivia Waite did a great job on the boards. Miranda and Mikhaela both did a very good job in helping in our press break, and Payton was able to find ways to finish at the rim.”

The Wildcats travel to Marysville Getchell (8-4, 14-4) to play the season finale at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1.
