Wildcats close gap but drop 2 / Softball

After suffering through a pair of recent one-sided losses, the Oak Harbor High School softball team held its own in its last two contests.

The Wildcats lost 3-0 at Mount Vernon Tuesday, March 20, and 8-2 at Arlington the following afternoon, closing out a run of four games in four school days.

Oak Harbor (0-3, 0-5) hosts Marysville-Getchell (1-1) at 4 p.m. Friday, March 23.

Mount Venron 3, Oak Harbor 0

Wildcat starter Rylee Joseph kept the Bulldogs (1-2) off the board until the fourth inning when Mount Vernon tallied two runs. The Bulldogs added another run an inning later to pad its lead in the non-league game.

Oak Harbor could not take advantage of its scoring opportunities, leaving runners stranded in five innings.

In all, the Wildcats left nine men on base.

Joseph, Cierra LeGendre, Miranda Wilson, Eleanor Tucker and Madisyn Erbe all collected hits for the Wildcats.

Arlington 8, Oak Harbor 2

The Eagles (2-1, 2-2) broke open a close conference game by scoring seven runs over the final three innings.

Wilson singled and scored in the first and third innings as Oak Harbor went up 2-0.

Two hits, a hit batter and an error allowed Arlington to score three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Like against Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor wasn’t able to get key hits, leaving 11 runners on base. Three times the Wildcats filled the bases but couldn’t score.

Wilson and Joseph paced the offense by reaching base three times each.
