Wildcats can’t escape preliminary rounds / Swimming

No Oak Harbor High School swimmers advanced to the finals after the preliminary rounds of the state 3A championships Friday, Feb. 17, at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Two Oak Harbor athletes, freshman Bruce Vagt and junior exchange student Enrique Perez, competed in two individual events and two relays. They were joined on the relays by seniors Jose Cabigting and Andrew Franssen.

The Wildcats placed about where they were seeded coming into the state meet.

Vagt recorded the best finish, 18th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.24). He was also 21st in the 200 free (1:54.25), one spot behind Perez (1:54.13).

Perez was also 20th in the 100 free (51.07).

The 200 medley relay placed 22nd (1:48.59) and the 200 free relay finished 23rd (1:36.36).

The state finals are Saturday, Feb. 18.
