Wildcats blank Meadowdale for first Wesco win / Soccer

A solid all-around performance carried the Oak Harbor High School soccer team to a 3-0 win over Meadowdale Tuesday, April 11, at Wildcat Memorial Stadium.

The victory snapped a six-match winless streak for the Wildcats and gave Oak Harbor its first conference win this season.

Oak Harbor was helped by better health.

“It was nice to have 16 of 18 players (Andrew Fanssen and Nathan Merrill are still out) available for the first time in nine games,” coach Jeff Laiblin said. “We saw today the return of the potential the early season was showing. If we continue to improve and jell, the second half on the league season shows great potential.”

Oak Harbor stunned the Mavericks by scoring in the first 28 seconds, thanks to a goal by Kurtis Zylstra and an assist from JJ Mitchell.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Seth Gluth, with an assist from Kegan Snell, scored with a 40-yard bomb. Mitchell, off an assist from Spencer Champion, scored with eight minutes left in the match.

“Our 3-0 win was the complete effort we were looking for,” Laiblin said. “A solid offensive performance, creating many quality opportunities. A solid defensive effort, limiting Meadowdale to a few quality opportunities that Jared Hoyt turned away in goal to seal the first shutout of the season.”

Laiblin praised the play of defenders Gluth, Taylor Jackson, Kanoa King, Cameron Costner, Josh Coe and Eric Closson.

“We also had solid play by Enrique Perez-Herranz, Chaz Purdy and Julian Hinkle in the midfield,” he added.

Oak Harbor (1-5-1, 3-6-2) plays Shorewood (4-2-1, 4-5-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, at Shoreline Stadium.
