Wildcat soccer team drops match to Stanwood

Oak Harbor girls’ soccer team traveled to Stanwood Thursday in the first of three games against what coach Jeff Laiblin called the league’s “heavy hitters,” and the Spartans lived up to that billing by winning 6-0.

Laiblin said, “We picked the wrong night to play our worst game. We came out flat and were not physical.”

He said that the Spartans had superior speed and scored four goals on breakaways. “You have to play physically” to control speed Laiblin said. “We didn’t. Unfortunately we took a step backward, but we learned a lot of valuable lessons tonight.”

Laiblin liked the play of his central-mids, Erin Neilon and Katie Schneider, who were “supported by” Morgan Dutton and Ashley Everett.

The Wildcats continue their trek through the league’s best next week. Defending state champion Everett comes to town Tuesday at 7, and the Wildcats travel to Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday.
