Wildcat Battalion finishes 2nd at regional Navy meet / JROTC

The Oak Harbor High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps placed second at the regional Northwest Navy Drill Meet Saturday, April 21, at Curtis High School.

This was the first ever Navy-only regional meet. Eight of the 12 Washington NJROTC units competed; Oregon school chose not to attend.

The meet was based on the Navy national drill, academic and athletic competition held each year in Pensacola, Florida.

At Curtis, Oak Harbor finished second in athletics, fourth in overall drill and fifth in academics to earn its overall second-place award.

In individual competition, Bradley Moon was first in armed drill down and Jhaylan Munger was second out of 30 in unarmed drill down.

No marksmanship competition, a Wildcat strong suit, was held.

In the athletic competition, Wildcat Battalion was first in pushups, the 8×220 relay and 10×100 relay and sixth in curl-ups.

In drill, Oak Harbor placed second in unarmed exhibition; third in armed basic, armed exhibition and unarmed basic; and fifth in color guard.

“The most difficult part of this meet was drilling on the football field and the drill areas were limited,” Chief William Thiel said. “The weather up here has not been very good to be able to practice on our field.”

Thiel added that he and Cdr. Mike Black are “extremely proud of all our cadets.”
