Wildcat Battalion closing in on divisional title / JROTC

The Oak Harbor High School NJROTC unit racked up 10 more first places at the latest meet Saturday, Jan. 26, at Everett High School.

Wildcat Battalion competed against seven other school representing Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps JROTC programs.

Next is the final regular-season competition at Oak Harbor High School Feb. 16. This meet will determine the final divisional standings and which competitors advance to the regional meet March 16 in Oregon City.

The Wildcats captured five of the seven team events at Everett: unarmed drill (Gold), armed drill (Gold), academic, sporter air rifle and precision air rifle.

The two rifle teams are unbeaten this year and continued their winnings ways despite competing without one of their regular members and competing with an ill shooter and an injured shooter, according to coach Dave Goodman.

The precision team dominated the day by placing six shooters among the top eight, led by James Hart in first place. Lauren Crossley, Cierra LeGendre, Alexis Kunze, Anna Jones and Rylan Quiros finished 2-3-5-7-8.

Ivan Snyder placed second in sporter to pace the Wildcats. Megan Kunze took third, Trevor Westman fifth and Trevor Adams 10th.

In other team competition, physical strength No. 1 and academic No. 2 each nabbed third; physical strength No. 2, color guard No. 2 and unarmed (Purple) each placed fourth; and color guard No. 2 was fifth.

In addition to Hart in shooting, other Wildcats to win individual competition were Manik Bains (unarmed drill team commander), Daimen Christensen (armed drill team commander), Victor Zarate/James Fisher (dual armed exhibition drill) and Brennon Sanchez (armed drill down).

Ethan Macaluso (individual armed exhibition drill) and Anthony Herrera/Leanne Christensen (individual unarmed exhibition drill) placed third; and Noelle Pangilinan/Zach Evangelista (individual unarmed exhibition drill) were fifth.

Heading into final regular season meet in Oak Harbor, the Wildcats are leading the overall division standings in unarmed drill team (Gold), armed drill team (Gold), sporter rifle and precision rifle. Eight of the other 10 Oak Harbor teams are among the top three, and the two others are in fourth. The top three qualify for the regional meet.
